Working with Cyfle and co-presenter Matthew Redd, the mission was to teach aspiring media industry entrants to shoot using their mobile phones for Cardiff’s 4Talent day.

The emphasis was on the current ability for anyone to be able to create content anywhere using available technology and airing it to a world wide audience online, very easily. Using these tools to your own advantage its possible to make sure you stand out from others by showing enthusiasm for the form, technical skills and story telling skills.

Matt, a working AD and Drama series screenwriter discussed various access points into the television industry as well as his own journey.

A number of examples were shown of inspiring shorts shot on mobile phones and others who created short film with low budgets for the web to further their careers.

A particular favourite of mine – Split Screen – A Love Story. Directed by James W Griffiths winner of the Nokia Shorts Competition 2011

Splitscreen: A Love Story from James W Griffiths on Vimeo.

I then held a technical workshop on shooting for web covering:

How Long – The ideal length for online video content
Where’s It Going – Things to consider when choosing the platform for your video
How to Hold Your Phone for Filming
Basic Shot Framing
Basic Sound and Lighting techniques and considerations

I also provided links for free online editing tools to include
youtube remixer
photobucket
moviemasher

All tooled up, groups were organised and sent to shoot a short film on their mobile phones based on a theme. The theme was ‘the emotion – jealousy’.
Given a time limit, thinking quickly and under pressure was forced upon the groups.
Clips were shown at the end of the session, allowing each other to see the various techniques and ideas each group had adopted.

Footage was made available following the session for any of the groups to edit from home. A few have taken this opportunity and I can’t wait to see the final results!

Archive edit work for CC4 Museum of Welsh Cricket

I was employed by CC4 to edit together existing archive footage collected to represent an oral history of gathered memories and recollections of people in a number of Welsh cricket clubs.

The content consisted on many photographs and copies already digitised of photos dating back to the earliest days of cricket in Wales. Alongside these were audio recordings and video interviews of players recollecting key moments within their own clubs and the characters they came across through the sport.

All content was digitised prior to my involvement, as editor I created a 20 minute video highlighting some of the best bits within the archive. The final piece is currently on display within the museum on loop via two large screens.

Troy Boyz was a performance which combined digital media marketing strategies and digital live visuals with a range of dance genres.

Created by Tan Dance with digital content provided by Cyfle

Working for Cyfle, Natalie provided video content for both elements.

For the digital strategy a number of videos were commissioned, each lasting approximately 30 seconds as tasters to the story and the event. Under the direction of Rhys Miles-Thomes, videos were created combining street dance, graffitti art and skateboarding.

Natalie attended training events to capture dancers as groups and individuals. Each video was released during the run up to the live event for performers to share and promote the final event.

Footage during the show included a ‘floating head’ and still shots which were interpreted as moving images through stop motion by Ed Millington

A showcase documentary of the digital content provided for this event is currently underway and shall be posted here.

The bulk of my work is creating showcase content for some of their extensive courses that have run over a period of 6months or more.

Towards the final weeks of a course I will meet with all students to discuss and record all of the work they have done through the course. I will also collect vox pop testimonials from a selection of industry professionals who have spoken on the course.

Showcase videos are presented at the final showcase event of each course and can also be found within the Cyfle website.

Made in Wales is a short series of films organised by media training company, Its My Shout. Each year 6 short films are created by a combination of new entrants to the industry and experienced professionals. Once the series is complete, each film is aired on BBC Wales, followed by a 30minute documentary on the production process. The experience culminates in an awards ceremony where all the films are celebrated and awards are given to those who have been seen to achieve great standards of work during the process.

Natalie directed and produced the documentary entitled ‘Made in Wales- The Making Of’. Created with the assistance of new industry entrants under Natalies’s guidance and co-produced by the BBC and Its My Shout. The 2011 documentary tells the story of 3 individuals who are beginning their careers and experiencing a professional short film shoot for the first time.

These individuals personal experience range greatly, from Taryn, supporting actress, who finds Its My Shout filming from the estate she lives, to Gavin Porter – a director who has a passion for documentary but takes firm hold of this fantastic opportunity to direct fiction for television. And finally Seimon who has participated with Its My Shout several times over the years and is finding his role progressing each year, even now, with his new freelance career in the Art Dept kicking off, he still values the experiences gained on the Made in Wales series. The documentary is tied together with first time broadcast presenter Kevin McCurdy whose enthusiasm for the scheme is evident.

The documentary covered a range of material from archive footage to location shooting, voice over recording and live event filming. It was edited offline by Natalie and assistant Marco Carini and the process was overseen by mentor Gareth Rees-Rowlands.
